The Maine Coon is the largest cat breed known in North America as well as the oldest. There are many legends that surround the origin of the Maine Coon breed, each one more fantastic than the other. None of the legends have any proven records which of course add to their mystery and charm.

The most colorful of them all is that the Maine Coons are descendants of the six cats that belonged to Marie Antoinette. They were supposed to accompany her in her escape from France but while she faced death they got a new lease of life across the world in Maine.

A staider local legend points to the formation of the largest cat breed in America from the mixed mating between raccoons with wild as well as domestic cats. Though there is no scientific proof of such breeding the legend has probably contributed the ‘coon’ to the name. A more plausible tale is the legend of the English seafarer called Captain Charles Coon and his pet long-haired cats. Whenever he docked in American shores, legend has it that his cats would stroll ashore and mate with the local cats. It could be that the name Coon came from this legend or why the Maine Coon is also called the American Longhair.

Known as the official State Cat of Maine, the Maine Coons are found abundantly in and around the State of Maine. Typically they are of rectangular shape, have long fluffy coats and a large bone structure. It has a long bushy tail, heavily furry ears, and round tufted feet – all of which shows how it can survive the harsh winters in Maine. Maine Coons grow into their full size when reaching 3 -5 years of age. The average female can weigh anything between 9 and 12 pounds while the average male weighs something between 13 to 18 pounds. Despite their size, the largest cat breed shows a temperament which is extremely sweet, gentle and friendly earning them the nickname of the Gentle Giants.

Maine Coons are known for their relaxed and easy-going nature. They are very playful but will hardly ever rush. The males are still prone to a bit of tomfoolery but the female of the species is always calm and dignified. They are very patient with inquisitive kids as well as other pets in the house.

This calm exterior, however, hides a hardy and intelligent being that can survive the harshest of climes and face the wrath of nature alone. This largest cat breed is equally comfortable on land and water, unlike other cats which shows that there could be some truth in their legendary seafaring history.

They are prone to ailments like hip dysplasia, feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, spinal muscular atrophy, and polycystic kidney disease. But all these afflict them at an advanced age and there is preventive care available that can ensure that your cat stays ahead of such conditions. Taking care of a pet which comes from the largest cat breed might sound daunting but in realit,y the Maine Coons are pretty much self-sufficient and do not need their owners to hover all the time. They are very social and friendly but also content to be in their company for hours – in short, the ideal companion.
